Chatting to yourself on the phone

Some people report experiencing paranormal phenomena over the telephone. And it makes you wonder - how long will it be before the first spooky encounters via internet or text messaging?

A lady called Jill recalled an unusual experience at a time when she had separated from her husband and was not living in the marital home.

One day, her elder daughter telephoned to say that her young sister's car had broken down.

Jill then rang her old home hoping to contact her son who still lived there at that time.

She was surprised when a woman answered the telephone. The woman confirmed she had the right number and address. Jill asked if her son was at home.

The woman replied that her son had gone away for the weekend. Jill was so startled she hung up.

After a few moments Jill rang again. The same person answered. Jill then said, "but you can't live there, that is my home. The voice replied: "well you know that."

It then dawned on Jill that she was in fact speaking to herself.

This story was recounted to Rugeley ghost author Carol Arnall. And she too has had a strange experience via the telephone of her own.

One Saturday afternoon in October 1986, she and her husband John were returning home from visiting friends.

"We were travelling along the M6 motorway and decided to call in at the Hilton Park Service Station at Cannock for a coffee," recalls Carol.

"Having refreshed ourselves I told my husband that I was going to make a quick telephone call to my mother. Why I should decide to do this at that particular time I will never know as I could quite easily have waited the 20 minutes and used my telephone at home. But it seemed imperative to ring then."

But when the call connected, Carol received a shock. A strange lady answered the phone. Puzzled, Carol asked if her mother was in.

The lady replied: 'No Carol, she's out.'

"Shakily I replaced the receiver unable to believe my own ears. The voice was definitely that of my Grandmother, but how could it be? She had died 10 years ago," says Carol.

Carol called the operator and asked her to connect her thinking it was possible she had dialled incorrectly. She made the connection and the same voice answered.

"I asked again for my mother and she replied: 'I've told you Carol, she's out shopping."

"Reaching home, I called my mother again," continues Carol. "This time, much to my relief, she answered. I told her what had happened and she was quite incredulous and like me could not understand how such a thing could occur."

Phone Calls From The Dead:

This is a phenomenon, in which the recipient actually receives a phone call from a deceased person they knew, and the caller ususally had some close relationship to the recipient.

The Caller, is ususally claimed to speak some sort of familiar words to the recipient, to make them know and understand who is calling. They can use pet names, bithdays, anniversaries, etc., to let them know exactly who they are, and confirm it's them, or to just say "Hi, I wish you well," on that special day they had, or enjoyed together. As a way of getting to say 'Good-bye,' a warning message, or some important information needed desperately by the recipient.

The calls are said to be short, sometimes the voice of the caller sounding distant, or the line will cut off, or even more, if the recipient get's scared and hangs up. Sometimes the voice may be heard over static, or too distant to be made out correctly.

Calls have been reported to be within moments of death, 24 hours from time of death - to years. Some claim to have talked and carried conversations with people, only to find out later that the person had passed away.

There have been many therories put forward to explain this sort of 'phenomena.' Three examples are;

1. They are really calls made by the deceased by manipulating the telephone as some sort of 'supernatural manipulation.'

2. They are hallucinations caused in part by Psychokinesis (PK) accomplished subconsciously by the recipient.

3. The calls are pure fantasy, prank phone calls, or tricks played on the living by the dead.

Most modern parapsychologists do not take such call's seriously. In the early twentieth century, investigators modified the telegraph and wireless with the hopes of communicating with the dead. Thomas Edison, whose parents were Spiritualists, worked on but never completed a telephone that he hoped would connect the living with the dead. During the 1940's the "psychic telephone" experiments were conduct in England and America in attempts to reach the dead. Again, interest arose in the 1960's when Konstantin Raudive announced that he had captured voices of the dead on electromagnetic tape (EVP).

A Story:

There was once an elderly lady who lived alone in her home along an old country road.

One night, there was a terrible storm raging outside and she was awakened by the phone ringing....

"Hello?" She said into the reciever.

But all she heard was static on the line, and so quickly hung up.

The next night, the same thing happened, the phone rang, and again she said hello only to hear static on the other end of the line. But, before she could hang up, she swore she heard a faint, "Hello?"

By the third night, she grew tired of the calls, and the next morning called the phone company to see what was wrong with her line. They told her they'd check it out as soon as possible, for many lines were down because of the storm a few nights before.

That night, again, the phone rang...

"Hello?" She said anoyingly into the reciever.

Unexpectedly, a voice answered her just barely over the static....

"Hello-Wife, is that you?"

Shocked, she quickly hung up and took the phone off the hook.

The next day, she noticed a phone crew working on her line.

"I am glad you finally came! I have been receiving the worst of prank calls!"

The two men looked at eachother in amazement, and then turned to the lady saying,

"But, that's Impossible! This line was cut off by the storm, and lying in the cemetery. We are just now fixing it back up for you...."

She complained that couldn't be right, for she was getting phone calls every night. The men just stared at her, as so she gave up, and decided to get in her car and see for herself.

She followed the telephone line, which did indeed lead straight through the cemetery. Wating to see just exactly where it went, she parked her car and followed on by foot.

As she went across the cemetery, she stoped, and almost fainted at what she saw.

The telephone line, ran right over, her dead Husbands grave! Could it have really been him, trying to contact her?

I had a phone call...

*Silence Then Static
4/11/06

I have always had a sixth sense or strong intuition and I have received short messages from many deceased people in dreams. My brother-in-law passed away almost 3 years ago 5-31-2003. We have since moved to another home. Twice since we have moved here I have answered the phone where there is silence for almost a minute then static. This is not a fax phone call at all. Today I distinctly heard a voice answer a question to me which is very disturbing. My husband  (42 years old) has been very depressed for the past 3 years because they were extremely close. I asked the static whom I felt very strongly was my deceased brother-in-law if he was coming for my husband. He yelled "right" from the static loud enough for me to hear him. I have had a sick feeling lately that my husband wants to be with him. I have asked him this and he says though he does not want to die he knows I will be OK because I have a lot of people around me. Also all throughout the day and especially during the night hours the phone rings about a half a time like someone - perhaps my brother-in-law - is trying to get through. He was a wonderful kind accomplished ER doctor. He died of a massive heart attack at age 51. He was very impatient sometimes when he wanted to do something. I am wondering if his impatience in pulling my husband over to the other side is causing the bizarre half rings. Also my husband is sick right now with a bad kidney stone. I'll write back when more strange calls occur.

My Story About Ghost Phone Calls

*Phone call from my partner
5/6/07

My partner died on the 30th of august 2002. exactly 9 months later I just moved into a new house that day 9th of may 2003 without knowing at the time but I was in danger being in that house that night around 7 PM my mobile starts ringing when I looked at the number it was robs number calling me. I had not erased robs number from my phone even though his number had been disconnected. when I saw his number ringing I went into shock I showed everyone there the phone and they were all saying oh my god answer it. It rang 4 times then I got the guts to answer it and all I could hear was a very static voice say my initials kb and that's what he used to call me. I was so freaked out that I drove for an hour to his best friends place and told him what was happening so he called from his house phone and he got the same thing, we couldn't tell if it were robs voice but the fact that we could get through and his number was ringing me and getting a very far away voice says kb it freaked us all out. It all happened that night but never happened again. The real weird thing was just after he died even though his phone was disconnected I would try and send him messages so he could get them so I would still sent text messages to his phone on the nights I'd really break down. That is one of many experiences I've had with rob communicating with me, specially when I'm in danger.

*Call From The Dead
8/23/07

About 1 month after my mother passed away..My husband and I went to her home to clean some of her clothes out of her room to give to goodwill. The phones in the home had been disconnected 2 days after she died. When I was coming out of her room....the phone that she always used....started to ring. .. I picked it up and  heard an open line then hung it up right away because I was so freaked out. No other phone rang in the home. She had 5 phones all to the same phone number and only the one rang. My husband then gave me his cell phone to try and call her phone number and as expected the phones were disconnected and none rang in the home. I believe that this was my mother and that I shouldn't have hung up so quick and should have tried to listen to see if she was trying to communicate with me.

"Telephone to the Dead" or "Franks Box"

The man with the box that supposedly talks to the dead is Christopher Moon, his website is http://hauntedtimes.com. He hosts GHU's, or Ghost Hunter Universities at haunted places all over the country. He simply gives us information on the paranormal using a power point presentation, and then we investigate the building for paranormal activity, then we use his box that talks to the dead, or what he calls it, 'Franks Box'.

It costs about 100 dollars to attend, but it is worth it if you really want to see the box in action. There was really no way to prove the box worked, unless you asked it for some sort of proof, and they didn't really give us any.

And be prepared when you listen to the box because you can not make out anything the spirits are saying, it is just static with muffled voices. Christopher Moon claims he is one of the few who can interpret what they say.

We were really skeptical about it when it was over. He said that the spirit called my name when I went up the stairs for something. I did not hear it, but they said it did.

The box also supposedly said that there were patents buried under the wooden floor. We did look for them, but no success. We tried on three different days. We are interested in trying the attic floor instead.

I say its worth it, if one day he finds proof to show the world that it is real, we can say we saw the box. And besides, the class is very educational and you can sit and talk with him all you want, there is only like 20 people at each of the classes. (You can record the whole thing if you like)

I hope this was some help to you. If you need anything else, you know where to reach me.

Thanks again,

*MY STRANGE PHONE CALL
8/3/08

PLEASE NOTE: I HAVE CHANGED THE NAMES & DATES OF THE PEOPLE IN THIS TRUE STORY TO PROTECT THOSE WHO ARE INVOLVED, AND WHO KNOW OF, AND ARE SENSITIVE TO MY EXPERIENCE.

I've known Joan for more than thirty years - we met in 1974. She has a grown up daughter named Jill who was born in 1958. After I'd known Joan for about twelve years, I visited her house for the first time in around 1986. She took me into a room where I had a 'feeling' that I could not put my finger on - that is all I can say, but could not explain it. However, a little while later,  I discovered that Joan had had another daughter named Rachel who had passed away in that room at only 15 years of age back in 1960, (Jill was only two at the time and therefore does not remember her sister Rachel) and that she had kept the room unused since - until that day we went in - when I had the feeling of what I now realise must have been my sensitivity to the 'opening up' of what can be likened to that of a 'tomb'.

Since then, but only recently, when speaking to Joan on the phone, I have been receiving two images concerning the dead girl Rachel; one; I can see her clutching a sort of what we would call nowadays (but perhaps not then) a sort of cuddly toy, but instead of it being a perfectly made shop-bought one, it would appear to be a home-made one all sort of out of proportion. i.e. straggly limbs - arms and legs that are too long for its body perhaps. It appears black but could be just dark in colour, and I cannot tell if it is human (doll-kind) or animal - it is so vague...

The other image I was getting was more prominent; I get an image involving a telephone, a telephone call, or the dead girl using the phone, or some telephone call involving or connected with the dead girl in some way.  Since receiving these images, I've always assumed of course that this must concern some telephone or call that took place during the dead girl's lifetime. I told the mother of both these images I was getting in case they meant anything to her - she said not, but she did not sound terribly convincing, but I put this down to perhaps her not wishing to talk about her dead daughter - and particularly to someone who never knew her. However, I do know that Joan did used to make home-made soft toys at around the time Rachel lived.

However, I rang Joan one evening (I ring her often) and she answered as usual, but I had to terminate the call rather quickly because of another call I had that was coming in. When I'd finished the said call, I rang Joan back, but it is important here to note that I did not dial her number again, but simply pressed the 'redial' button, and so I could not have misdialled, since I had already spoken to her briefly previously on that dialling. The ringing tone on this occasion was rather feint, but then a girl's voice answered that said in a clear voice;  'Hello'. This sounded like a person in adolescence, yet was slightly familiar, because it had an extreme likeness to Gill - Joan's older daughter who is now aged 50, and although there seemed to be such an age discrepancy, the only thing I could think of to say was; 'Is that Jill?'? The girl replied: 'No, this is Rachel'. Though terribly taken aback and somewhat shocked, I immediately thought of the dead girl, and so I dithered my response and said: 'Sorry, who did you say that was?' She repeated: 'It's Rachel!'  his was said emphatically and with an exclamation of  'familiarity' one uses when people should be recognised. Still perplexed,  shocked, and in my heart believing this to be the dead daughter I never knew, I went on to say: 'Is Joan there?' (the dead girl's mother)  and then there was a long silence,  and instead of waiting for a reply, and sounds silly, because I knew I had not, I simply said: 'Sorry,  I must have dialled the wrong number', and hung up! It all happened and was over in a matter of seconds - I was not upset or afraid in anyway, just left with the feeling of being caught off guard and unprepared,  I mean it was not like I'd attended a seance or anything where one is expecting to speak with such people. After the shock and realisation of what had happened, I immediately pressed the redial button on my phone again,  (note: I did not re-dial, and so no error in dialling could have occurred) and I got my friend Joan as usual (the dead girl's mother) thus confirming that I could not have misdialled.

To this day I believe to have spoken to Rachel - a girl who has been dead for many years, and when I asked for my friend 'Joan', I believe now that what I should have said, and was indeed expected to say to the dead girl was: 'Is your mother there?',  as when one thinks logically, when one rings a friend who has children and one of them answers the 'phone,  we do not ask to speak to the female parent by name, but we say: 'Is your mum, or mother there?'.

So far, I have no logical explanation for this experience, other than it would explain the significance of the image I was getting whenever I spoke to the mother regarding the telephone, and/or call that involved the dead girl. It would also explain why it meant nothing to the mother, as it had not occurred during the dead girl's lifetime, but was in fact something that had not yet happened. It is interesting to note that also since this experience, I no longer get this image - only the one concerning the soft toy the dead girl is still clutching I still get. And for those out there who may prefer to suspect the living daughter Jill of some sick joke; having known the family for more than thirty years, I do not think her capable of the joke, or the different voice. The living daughter and mother are extremely close, and I also cannot believe that anyone could show such disrespect to their dead sister by playing such a twisted prank, (and for what purpose?) or that a daughter would cause such distress to her own mother whom she loves dearly...

I shall not be caught off guard again!
