The Entity

Based partially on a true story, a woman is tormented and sexually molested by an invisible demon.

MOVIE SYNOPSIS: 1981 release -A single mother, ( Carla Moran played by Barbara Hershey ), living in the suburbs of Los Angeles comes under repeated assault by an invisible demon(s). The assaults consist mostly of her being raped by the demon(s), an event that leaves her bruised and scared enough to seek psychological assistance. Her psychologist finds the stories incredulous, but her best friend finally sees the truth in her stories and a team of parapsychologists who are eager to investigate. They move into her house and record the Entities movements -- they later set up a trap for the malevolent spirit, which it breaks out of. At the end of the film, the attacks have not stopped but the woman seems to have come to some kind of "understanding" with the Entity.

In 1974, a team working under Dr. Thelma Moss, ( Moss had been a very prominent UCLA parapsychologist at the time ), began the investigation of the Culver City, CA, haunting. The Entity case became one of the most famous in paranormal research history. Amongst other things the investigating team captured an incredible 35mm photo showing reverse arcs of light over Moran's head. This photo was even published in "Popular Photography" magazine, as well as being broadcast on the popular TV show Sightings in 1992. ( See photo below ). The haunting was never resolved and Moran actually moved at least five more times, but the entity apparently "followed" her each time. It is reported that she apparently still has paranormal situations occur, but not as frequently anymore.

As you can see within this picture, the large arc expands over a corner of the wall WITHOUT bending with the wall, ( showing it's NOT a trick of light ), making this picture very important in the investigation.

Dr. Kerry Gaynor and Dr. Barry Taff were the first to be approached by Carla Moran to investigate the paranormal phenomenon at her house, later to be known by the movie "The Entity." In interviews done by Omni Magazine, Fate - 1996, and also in the movie documentary Sightings - "Ghost's", Dr. Gaynor explains in his own words how it all happened and came to be.

*It was 1974 when Gaynor began to investigate the Culver City, California, haunting. "At the time I had a colleague named Barry Taff," said Gaynor. 'We were working under the auspices of Dr. Thelma Moss, but Barry and I did most of the research on this case." Gaynor notes that Moss was a prominent UCLA parapsychologist who is now retired.

Gaynor and Taff made an appointment with the woman from the bookstore to discuss her case. Gaynor said the first time they visited the woman they conducted a two-hour interview. But Gaynor knew that she was holding something back. I kept pushing her," said Gaynor. "Finally she said that a ghost had raped and beat her.

'We laughed when we left her home, and I thought she was probably off her rocker. But she called me back a few days later and said that several people visiting her had seen an apparition, And this is what we're always looking for independent verification of the phenomena.

"I'm a scientist and that's how I approach it. I don't take their stories at face value. Their story is the beginning and I don't discount it, but I'm there to experience the phenomena and document it."

The Entity case was to become one of the most famous in paranormal research history. It was so well-documented, in fact, that a movie was made about it. The 1983 film The Entity starred Barbara Hershey and was loosely based on the Culver City haunting. Gaynor and Taff served as technical advisors on the film.

The second time Gaynor and Taff visited the Entity house, things began to happen. Although they never saw the apparition, they witnessed visual phenomena. "We were seeing little pops of light," said Gaynor. "They would happen quickly. We would try to shoot the camera, but they were happening too quickly and we just couldn't catch them. We were shooting with a Polaroid and with a 35mm camera."

I was standing in the kitchen talking to the woman's 16year-old son when a lower cabinet door slammed open and a pan came flying out," said Gaynor. It flew out and landed about three or four feet from the cabinet. I immediately tore the cabinet apart to see if there were any tricks, or if anyone was hiding in the cabinets. But there was nothing. And that's when everything started.

"The lady screamed, 'It's in the bedroom. We ran in there and that's when all the lights started happening. Thats when we got the Polaroid shots.

"The lady shouted, 'The ghost is in the comer.'We snapped the picture, but it was bleached out and not very interesting.

"She shouted again, 'It's in the corner.' And again the photo was bleached. At this point, I thought the camera wasn't working. So I took two control pictures. I asked her if the ghost was gone. She said yes. The picture came out perfectly. A few seconds later I took another one. Perfect picture.

"But then we got the most interesting Polaroid. The woman said, 'It is right in front of my face.' Those were her exact words. So we took a shot. And in the photo you can see the curtains and the buttons on her dress, but her whole face is obliterated. We took a second picture when she once again said, 'It's right in front of my face.' Amazingly, her face was obliterated again, but you could see details in the rest of the picture.

"At this point I wanted another control picture. So I asked if the ghost was gone. When she said it was gone, the picture I took was perfect."

"On the third night we decided to start with a seance in the bedroom," said Gaynor. The walls of the bedroom, however, were covered with chipped and uneven paint. Some of Gaynor's colleagues had commented that the uneven paint created images in his photographs. So the researchers covered the walls entirely with black poster board, so that nobody could make that claim again. They also numbered the black paper boards with a magnetic orientation and a number.

"Then the lights appeared," said Gaynor. 9 would call out, 'All right, blink three times on board number two for yes. Blink twice on board number five for no.' It would blink on the exact board that I asked it to. At that point the level of excitement really increased, because it seemed like we were communicating with something intelligent.

"But I was very concerned that somebody was faking it by projecting light onto the wall. So I said to it, 'If you're really here, come off the wall. 'I didn't think anything would happen. But then the light pulled right out of the wall and floated into the middle of the room. It started spinning and twisting and expanding in different directions simultaneously. I had nine professional photographers shooting every angle of that room.

It was extraordinary because it was floating in the middle of the room and the light was dimensional. It is very difficult to fake something like that. If you project light, you have to project it onto a flat surface. You can't project light into empty space unless you have some kind of very sophisticated laser system."

Gaynor said this was not likely a sophisticated hoax because this house had twice been condemned by the city, and the investigators had sealed off the entire bedroom. Nobody could go in or out during the photo session.

"What we saw was not what ended up in the photograph," said Gaynor. "We were seeing balls of light, but the photo shows arcs of light over the woman's head."

Taff, Gaynor's colleague at the time and now a Los Angeles parapsychologist and writer, confirms witnessing this phenomena at the Entity house. Taff described the lights as three, dimensional greenish-yellow, to-white balls of light. "We never saw arcs of light. We saw balls of light," said Taff. "However, the camera captured arcs.'; The team captured a spectacular 35mm photo showing reverse arcs of light over the woman's head. ( Picture shown above ).

This photo was published in Popular Photography magazine. "Popular Photography has never published a ghost photograph before or since," said Gaynor. "But they published this one." This photograph was also broadcast on the television show Sightings in 1992.

Gaynor said he was not able to rid the woman of the assaulting ghost. "I'm not an exorcist," said Gaynor. I document the phenomena. I research the phenomena, and I do a lot of counseling with these people."

The woman described the attacking entity as a solid male figure that she did not recognise. So how did the woman know it was a ghost? "Because after the ghost assaulted her," said Gaynor, "it faded away."

"There were actually three apparitions according to her account," Gaynor stated. "Two would hold the woman down and the third would rape, her. It was horrible. She would call me in the middle of the night screaming, and I would go over there and she would be all beaten up. She had black and blue marks all over her body." But Gaynor never witnessed the attacks nor saw the apparitions in solid form.

Gaynor said, however, that he and several of his colleagues did witness the formation of a full-figured apparition. 'We saw the head take shape and then the shoulders. The light extended down to the ground until it became a full humanoid figure of greenish-white light. Then it just vanished, almost as if somebody pulled the plug. It didn't fade away. It just vanished. Everybody was completely in awe and silent as we watched this happen."

Taff adds, "After the apparition disappeared, two young men assisting our investigation passed out and had to be carried from the room."

"The question, of course is, Were the attacks done by a person, or were they done by a ghost?" said Gaynor. "And there is no way to distinguish between the two. The apparition didn't rape anyone else except the woman. These attacks were very personal.

"The attacks only happened very late at night. One night the woman's 16-year-old son heard his mother screaming. He ran into her bedroom and saw his mother being thrown around on the bed. When the son reached over to help her, something hit him on the head and threw him across the room. He broke his arm."

Gaynor noted an unusual coincidence. When the movie The Entity was being filmed, the actor playing the role of the son broke the same arm while filming this particular scene.

The woman was attacked about 15 times during the ten-week investigation. "But she got stronger," said Gaynor. "And she was able to realise that she wasn't crazy and that there really was something going on. She got stronger, and in my opinion, she outlasted it."

The woman moved five times, but the attacking entity followed her. She eventually moved further away. "As she moved," Gaynor said, "the phenomena diminished, and after about two years the attacks stopped altogether,"

Gaynor said he cannot prove ghosts exist. But what is proof? "A ghost in a jar," said Gaynor, "or at least that's what the scientific community would want."

Gaynor said he doesn't feel any need to convince the world to believe in ghosts. I want the public to know about it, but I don't have an agenda. I'm not interested in standing on a pulpit and saying, 'You must believe in ghosts.' Something is going on that demands our attention. I'm much more interested in figuring it out."*

Supernatural attacks and manifestations: an analysis
by Dr Beverley Sequeira
January 23, 2004

Well, it's a question, which while as old as mankind is one that finds itself being addresses even today. All civilisation have been shown to have sense of insecurity and fear over spotty but recurring reports of phenomenon that leave man feeling victimised by hostile beings with supernatural powers. The most common human response to incidents such as these is naturally confusion or fear and human beings indefinitely have responded to such supernatural challenges in various ways. Words, rites, amulets have ritually been employed in response to supernatural attacks and manifestations dating back even to the ancient Semitic civilization like the Babylonians and their feared Udog demons as it is seen in present day Christian rites of exorcism.

So how do we look at incidents such as those associated with supernatural phenomena? Do we believe or merely relegate it to the psychotic machinations of a fevered mind? Of course in our modern world there are three main stances which, no doubt in various combinations characterise the multitude of attitudes that individuals assume towards reports of siege by mysterious
powers.

The first is scientific - which views the world and perhaps the universe as being governed by unvarying laws that have either been discovered or at the least are discoverable by scientific investigation. Then diametrically opposed to this views the - shall we say - superstitious which focuses on unseen spiritual realities and seems to deplore if not ignore the findings of science, seeing empirical realities as shallow and meaningless. The third stance of course, contains a little of each and while adhering to science as a natural method, broadens the vistas of positive science, incorporating spiritual dimensions of reality through theological and philosophical consideration. This stance is based more on faith and cannot really be classified, but can be termed as the religious.

The reaction the world over, when any supernatural phenomena is reported is one of absolute disbelief, precipitating a response to deny the reality of reported data and inevitably to refuse to examine the minute amounts of evidence there. Make no mistake - such phenomena does occur and to ordinary people and their families that are neither exhibitionists nor attention seekers. However, one cannot ignore that superstitious people seize on psychic phenomena for a sometimes unreasonable approach to life interjecting irrational fears and senseless preconceived notions and explanations.

What the best way to confront the issue - one might ask? Well, I suppose the balanced view to take is while admiring and accepting the findings of modern science and concluding that even projecting future development, it is without doubt myopic to think that nature does not reveal a depth of reality beyond the empirical realm of natural science. Thus it is evident that no matter what stance an individual adopts, will rest on certain prejudices that cannot be proven to the satisfaction of those who choose to adopt a different construct.

When any psychic phenomena does occur it is quite normal for people to be equally repelled by the naivete of the superstitious, the uncertainty of those who profess faith in the supernatural, but seem confused at their own beliefs and the haughty pride of those who assert with certainty things contradictory to one's own explanation. Ultimately the person who has experienced the phenomena is no doubt caught in a complex web of ignorance, bias and fear which exacerbate the individual?s suffering.

Psychiatrists hypothesize that concepts of such supernatural phenomena are usually based on rumors and mindsets. Many issues we believe are rarely based on facts rather on the ?I heard it form her? factor. In such cases there are said to be basic errors in communication i.e. deletion, distortion and generalisation.

So when an individual goes through a experience, his mind tends to delete and distort facts and people generally tend to generalise the issue making it a mindset. Another aspect is that if one has a high fear / anxiety quotient then that person would not be able to think rationally. Oliver Goldsmith said, 'Don't let us make imaginary evils, when you know, we have so many real ones to encounter'.

There are lots of uncertainties connected with the paranormal - however it would be remiss not to be warned of the dangers of both, an arrogance that professes a grasp of the unknown and that of a bravado that boasts of the control of the transcendent. It is rightly said that 'a wise man knows what he does not know.' However it is a prudent man who respects what he cannot
control.

ESP = Extra SEXUAL Perception

Paranormal / Psychic-Sexual Experiences:
You can't have one without the other because it's the same energy.

The surprise hot topic over the past couple of weekends on Art Bell's Saturday & Sunday editions of Coast To Coast AM has been explorations into the realms of paranormal sexual activity. Following an invitation for his listeners to e-mail him with their personal experiences with paranormal sexual activity, he was deluged with thousands, upon thousands, upon thousands, of responses. Art even went so far as to use the words, "monstrous" and, "gigantic" to describe the phenomena. Mr. Bell reported that the e-mailers were about evenly split as to their perceptions of the events as having been "positive" or "negative.

PERHAPS PSYCHIC-SEXUAL ACTIVITY IS NEITHER POSITIVE NOR NEGATIVE (neither "good" nor "bad"). PERHAPS WE ARE BECOMING AWARE THAT THE PHENOMENA OF PARANORMAL SEXUAL ACTIVITY JUST "IS", DUE TO THE SIMPLE FACT THAT WE'RE DEALING WITH A SINGULAR LIFE FORCE THAT CAN TAKE EITHER EXPRESSION.

Many of the phone callers to the show shared experiences that they deemed as being evil because they involved unwelcomed sexual encounters with spirit entities, somewhat as depicted in the movie, "The Entity". On the other hand, there have been many responders to the subject that have a neutral or positive view. In recent years, we have seen the phone-sex industry become a multi-million dollar enterprise. The phone lines themselves can become a conduit to carry psychic / sexual energies between two participants.  I have also heard of many instances of two individuals experiencing orgasm together by way of a shared dream involving a "physical" encounter. Sexual / romantic moments are often shared between two individuals (in both dream and waking states) following the death of one of them.

It seems to be only when the more passive individual succumbs to an uninvited sexual encounter from a (generally) unfamiliar spirit entity that the exchange is interpreted as being negative: "psychic rape". In the alignment of the seven primary chakras along the human subtle anatomy, the second (Creative / Sexual) Chakra has a symbiotic relationship with the sixth (Third Eye) Chakra. Energies drawn up along the spinal column in the rise of kundalini from the earth through the spinal base (Base Chakra) are balanced by the same life force energies entering the anatomy from the Crown (top of the head) Chakra. Ideally,
they blend together at the very center of the body in the Heart Chakra. When the same - life force - energy is more empowered from the base energies, we have a purely sexual ( non-romantic / non-psychic) event. When the energies are retained within the upper half of the body, they manifest as any form of psychic activity.  It is only when the two directional flows of Chi - Prana - Life Force balance together in the Heart Chakra that we have the idyllic equilibrium of being "in love".

Our religious and cultural traditions of Western society have sought to train us to be unaware, and even antagonistic, to either the sexual or psychic manifestations of Life Force. This has been one of the major controlling mechanisms over the masses during the Piscean Age. In the New (Aquarian) Age, the individual will become aware of the harmony of all energy, including the psychic / sexual connection. To be free and expressive with sexual energies opens the door for an equally psychic manifestation of the force. It is more often true than not that gifted "psychics" have an equally potent charge of sexual energies.

Psychic - sexual energy is neither good nor evil. It simply is what it is. Only our fears and limited concepts can disrupt the flow of Prana that seeks to balance itself within our being. Just consider....Your inner most (assumed to be private) sexual fantasies might- (just might - be viewed as you imagine them (and equally appreciated) on the inner psychic screen of the person you envision. So long as they don't ask, you'll be likely not to tell. (And vise-virsa.) Oh, the possibilities! It sort of gives a whole new definition of the term "virginity", wouldn't you think?

Anna Nicole Smith says a ghost once raised her spirits
Houston Chronicle News Services
June 10, 2004

Slimmed-down Anna Nicole Smith has men panting again. But even before she dropped 70 pounds, she says, she could raise men from the dead.

Interviewed in the July's FHM magazine (where she shows off her figure in an 11-page spread), Smith is asked what her kinkiest sexcapade was.

"A ghost would crawl up my leg and have sex with me at an apartment a long time ago in Texas," she says.

"I used to think it was my boyfriend, and one day I woke up and it wasn't. I was freaked out about it, but then I was, like, 'Well, you know what? He's never hurt me and he just gave me some amazing sex, so I have no problem.' "

*The Popobawa is a bizarre, elf-like entity said to inhabit remote east African jungles. It has a single eye in the center of its head, small pointed ears, bat wings and talons. The Popobawa has reportedly attacked humans. The presence of the often invisible Popobawa can be detected by an acrid smell or a puff of smoke. Sometimes, the Popobawa is visible to everyone except the terrified victim. It is believed to take human form by day, but with pointed fingers. Most victims are male and have been treated in hospitals for broken ribs, bruises and other injuries. In another weird twist, Popobawa tells it's victims to report the attack!

Sex-mad 'ghost' scares Zanzibaris

By Ally Saleh in Zanzibar

Fear has struck residents of the Zanzibar Islands after rumours of the re-emergence of a sexually voracious ghost that attacks people while they sleep in their beds at night.

Many Zanzibaris are now refusing to sleep in their houses as they believe it only preys on people in the comfort of their own beds.

The ghost or genie goes by the name of Popo Bawa and people believe that it sodomises its victims, most of whom are men.

In recent years the residents on the semi-autonomous Tanzanian islands claimed that Popo Bawa only visited the islanders during voting, such as in the contentious general elections in 1995 and 2000.

But to the surprise of many this current ghost has reappeared when there is no polling of any kind.

Smoke and smells

In the latest panic, he is said to be striking in the north of Zanzibar island as well as in central Pemba.

People claim his presence in a house is revealed by an acrid smell and a puff of smoke.

Victims then speak of being in a trance or dreamlike state as they are molested.

And, so the story goes, if they do not reveal what has happened then Popo Bawa will strike the next night.

A previous ghost, known for attacking children, was reported to have terrorised the islands for six months.
